Land of Lincoln rivals meet in Big Ten tussle

NCAA Basketball Betting Lines

02/12/2009 - Evanston, IL (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The 22nd-ranked Illinois Fighting Illini take aim at their 20th win of the season as they battle the Northwestern Wildcats in Big Ten Conference action from Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston.

Illinois has won two of its last three outings to improve to 19-5 overall and 7-4 against league foes. Sunday's victory was particularly impressive, as the Illini trounced a ranked Purdue squad in a 66-48 final. There is a bit of a concern heading into this evening's tilt, however, as four of the club's six true road games thus far have ended in defeat.

As for Northwestern, it carried a modest three-game win streak and presumably a wealth of confidence into Saturday's road clash with Iowa. Unfortunately, the Wildcats suffered a 56-51 setback, and they are now 2-6 in true road games. On a positive note, they are 11-2 at home in 2008-09.

Illinois owns a commanding 125-34 series lead over Northwestern, which includes nine straight wins over the Wildcats.

Illinois has four double-digit scorers in the lineup, and Demetri McCamey paces a balanced attack with 12.1 ppg. He has also dished out 120 assists to place second on the roster behind Chester Frazier (125). Mike Tisdale is scoring 11.0 ppg, and Mike Davis provides 10.6 ppg and 7.8 rpg. Trent Meachem is netting 10.2 ppg for the Illini, who are generating 67.0 ppg while limiting foes to 56.5 ppg on 39.4 percent field goal efficiency. Davis racked up 14 points and 16 rebounds to lead the UI charge in the victory over Purdue on Sunday. McCamey finished with 13 points and five assists in that clash, while Frazier added 10 points and five assists as well. Strong defense was the most obvious factor in the impressive win, as Illinois held the Boilermakers to 32.2 percent field goal efficiency.

Northwestern is scoring a modest 65.3 ppg this season, but the team has played tremendous defense, limiting foes to 59.8 ppg on 41.7 percent shooting from the field. The Wildcats are led by Craig Moore, who is posting 15.3 ppg. Kevin Coble checks in with 15.2 ppg, and Michael Thompson adds 10.0 ppg to go along with a team-high 82 assists. In the five-point loss to Iowa on Saturday, Moore scored 20 points, although he did shoot 6-of-18 from three-point range. The Wildcats only connected on 37.5 percent of their field goal attempts, including 7-of-26 from behind the arc, and they were outrebounded by a 33-26 margin.

Football Betting: Defensive Rookie of the Year Awards

Oddsmakers have released the odds for the 2009 AP NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Award and Seattle Seahawks linebacker Aaron Curry has been made the opening favorite.

Bet on NFL Football

Seattle took Curry with the fourth overall pick in April's NFL draft and plan on inserting him into its starting lineup right away. The Hawks traded linebacker Julian Peterson in the offseason, so Curry is expected to have a significant role in Seattle's defense next year and that's one of the primary reasons he is the favorite to win the NFL ROY Award.

Oddsmakers from online sportsbook MySportsbook.com have made Curry a 5/1 favorite to win this year's NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Award. Given that he was the best defensive prospect in this year's draft and how he'll have plenty of opportunities to make plays in '09, Curry offers a ton of value at 5/1.

Another thing working for Curry is the position he plays. A linebacker has won the defensive ROY award six straight times and eight of the last nine years. Jerod Mayo, Patrick Willis, DeMeco Ryans, Shawne Merriman, Jonathan Vilma, Terrell Suggs, Kendrell Bell and Brian Urlacher were the most recent linebackers to take home the award.

Following Curry at 5/1 are Tyson Jackson (Chiefs) at 7/1, James Laurinaitas (Rams) at 8/1, Brian Orakpo (Redskins) at 10/1, Rey Maualuga (Bengals) at 10/1 and Jerry Peria (Falcons) at 10/1.

All the players mentioned above are expected to start for their respective teams, but Jackson and Peria are going to have a tough time being recognized on a national level given they're both defensive linemen. D-linemen rarely put up the numbers that it takes to win an individual award like the ROY.

A couple of players with some value are Clay Matthews (Packers) at 12/1 and Larry English (Chargers) at 15/1. Matthews is expected to start at outside linebacker in Green Bay's new 3-4 defense and could rack up a ton of tackles. English, who was an impressive player at Northern Illinois, is expected to be a situational pass rusher for the Chargers and could rack up a ton of sacks.
